Questions for Your DJ

So you’ve picked your DJ and you’re all set to go for your wedding music – but before you hand the reins over entirely, there are some questions you’ll want answered in order to better plan for your wedding. Read on to get the full scoop!

1. Do you offer emcee services in addition to DJing?
Many DJs do emcee weddings, but not all of them. The answer to this question will determine whether or not you need to ask a family member or a friend to be the emcee for the night – someone needs to introduce the new married couple after all!

2. Have you worked at our venue before?
If the answer is “oh, plenty of times!”, consider yourself golden. However, if the DJ is unfamiliar with your venue, you’ll want to ensure that his equipment fits the size and technological requirements of the place. This is usually done through a visit, so be prepared to accompany your DJ to your venue at least once.

3. How would you describe your style?
This answer to this question could make it or break it – you will absolutely want to pick a DJ that meshes with you and your partner’s style, in terms of both music and business practices. If you’re a type-A person, you’ll want to stay away from the laidback DJ. While just as professional as others, you want to be sure you agree on all matters beforehand.

4. Can you provide a rundown of what is included in the package?
In addition to knowing how long the DJ will be of service, you’ll also want to get an idea of what else is covered in the package. Does the DJ bring all of his own equipment? Does he or she handle the setup and breakdown of the equipment? They may even offer other services (i.e. lighting, stage, etc.), so it’s important for you to have an understanding of everything he or she has to offer.

5. What is the song request policy?
Of course, your guests will have some certain songs that they want to hear at the wedding and, if it’s not on your pre-arranged list, they will ask for it. First, you’ll want to decide if you want to allow their requests (who asked for the Chicken Dance?!) and then defer to the DJ to see what his or her policy is.

Your DJ is an integral part of your wedding day so keep the above questions in mind while finding the very best fit!

Selecting the Best Entertainment for your Wedding

To choose a DJ or a band? It’s an age-old question and perhaps one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning your big day. Music is such a special element throughout your entire day, so you’ll surely want to choose the best match for you. Here are some of the advantages of choosing a disc jockey to provide the tunes for your wedding day!

Music Choice

Everyone has a favorite song to be played during their reception, whether it’s Ain’t No Mountain High Enough or the Cupid Shuffle. One of the perks of having a DJ is that you’ll get the actual song that you love, sang by the original artist. Even the best wedding bands can’t always match certain songs to exactly how the real artist sings them (not to say that isn’t a lovely experience!). However, many couples have “their song” and may not be looking for a variation, which isn’t something you’ll have to worry about with a DJ. Another advantage of having a DJ is the freedom that comes with picking a completely customized playlist. Generally, bands have a specific set list or repertoire that they stick to, which doesn’t always have the wiggle room for changes or additions – you may even be charged for learning a new song.

Built-in Emcee

Having a DJ also means that you have a “built-in” emcee that will help to guide the flow of your cocktail hour and reception. A DJ that will multi-task and emcee for the day takes the pressure off of you and your family members because you won’t have to think quite so much about the night’s timeline. For example, a DJ will make the announcement when the wedding party enters the reception, as well as inform guests when certain traditions are happening, such as the first dance, cake cutting, and bouquet toss. One less thing for you to worry about!

Price

For the most part, disc jockeys tend to be more cost effective than hiring a band. Not only can DJs come for a lower cost, but they can also provide other services that a band normally can’t provide, like lighting or sound systems. Choosing to go with a DJ can allow you to stretch your dollar further and can provide bundled services from one company rather than needing to hire many different vendors.

Rachel and Jonathan’s Casa Real Wedding

Rain on a wedding day isn’t always a bad thing – in fact, we’ve heard it brings good luck! Rachel and Jonathan didn’t let the weather affect them; if anything, they embraced the rain and made the most of it. This pair was so easygoing and so wonderful to work with!

How To: Select the Right Songs for your Playlist

Screenshot 2015-01-09 20.46.45

Your wedding will be one of the most memorable days of your life – doesn’t it deserve a great soundtrack? Selecting songs for your wedding playlist can be lots of fun, but there are several guidelines that you should follow to ensure happy guests and a lively dance floor!

  1. Sit down with your partner. Narrowing down your ideal playlist is not something to do alone. The day will be about you and your soon-to-be spouse, so it’s important that you are both included on the decision! The last thing you want is to have your first dance to a song your other half can’t stand.
  2. Make a list of “Must Plays” and “Must-Not Plays.” Can’t imagine a wedding without your favorite Norah Jones song? Does the thought of the Cha Cha Slide make you cringe? Be sure you are keeping a list of your “musts” and “must nots” to give to the DJ to keep you and your guests happy.
  3. Don’t plan out the entire evening. So you have your lists of favorite (and not so favorite) songs in hand, but do keep in mind that your DJ is an expert at what he or she does. They are professionals at getting people on the dance floor and having fun, so let them work his magic throughout the night. We promise you won’t be disappointed!
  4. Discuss your choices with your DJ. If you’re having trouble finding songs to agree on, get in touch with your DJ! They do this for a living, so they probably have some great suggestions for you and your beau to sort through.
  5. Ask your guests. A popular trend is to include a line on the RSVP card where guests can write a song request for the wedding. This is a great way to get an idea of what your guests want to hear. That being said, don’t feel obliged to give in to the requests for Gangnam Style or the Harlem Shake if that’s not your thing.

When it comes down to it, your wedding playlist should be full of songs that make you and your partner smile. Remember – your guests are there to celebrate you and to have a great time, regardless of whether they love the songs you chose. Also, don’t forget to take advantage of your most valuable resource: your DJ!

Cake Cutting Songs

One of the most common questions we receive during our final DJ meetings is “What song should I have for my cake cutting?” Picking a cake cutting song is the most challenging part of the music selection process because while you may have always dreamed of sharing your first dance to “I’ll Be” by Edwin McCain, I’ll bet you have never even thought about what song would be playing while you cut your cake.

Well, be prepared for a surprise, because I am here to tell you that it doesn’t really matter! I’m sure that is a shock to hear, but the fact of the matter is that you (and all of your guests) will be so wrapped up in the moment that you won’t even remember or hear what song is playing! With that being said, cake cutting is the perfect opportunity to play that song that you almost picked as your first dance song, or the one that was this close to being the soundtrack to your walk down the aisle.

Here is a list of some of the more popular cake cutting songs we have played, ranging from the cheesy to the classic, in case you are at a loss for inspiration:

What song are you planning on having during your cake cutting? Let us know!

Ask Kevin: When Should I Book?

Hi Kevin,

I just got engaged a couple weeks ago, and we just set our date for late 2014. I want to get everything locked down now, but I don’t know if I am starting too early. When is the best time to start looking for a DJ, Videographer, and Lighting vendor?

Thanks,

Marina

Danville, CA

0709-E1-0681

Hi Marina!

Thank you so much for your question!  Typically the best time to start looking for a DJ and videographer would be about 6-9 months before your wedding, if not sooner. This gives you time to get to know both vendors throughout the planning process, as well as get two important vendors booked and out of the way leaving more time to enjoy the engagement period.

As for lighting, you should begin contacting vendors 9-12 months before your event. Lighting sets the whole mood for the event, and as a result waiting could be risky. The last thing you want to do is wait until a week before your wedding to make the decision to book a lighting vendor only to find out they are all out of those beautiful chandeliers you had your heart set on. You can always add to your lighting down the road, but getting the basics taken care of early is the best way to ensure that you will be taken care of. I always recommend to book early, because then there will be less stress about what your venue is going to look like as the day creeps closer.

In fact, when it comes to vendors I will always tell my clients “If you like a vendor, and you mesh well, STOP shopping and BOOK!” Chances are if you wait and shop around and then decide that the one vendor you met with 6 weeks ago was the best, they will be booked and you will be sorry that you ever bothered meeting the others. Too many times there are clients that wait to book a DJ and by the time they do, that DJ is no longer available for their wedding!

The sooner you book those major vendors, the better. There is no better feeling than knowing who your DJ will be, how your videographer is going to shoot your wedding, and what your venue is going to look like on your big day, 6 months before the wedding. This gives you more time to focus on your florist, cake designer, photographer, and how amazing you are going to look when you take that walk down the aisle towards your soul mate, not to mention actually having the time to enjoy your engagement!

Hunnie and Peter’s Wedding at Casa Real at the Ruby Hill Winery

Hunnie and Peter tied the knot at Casa Real at the Ruby Hill Winery on September 1st, 2012, and we have been waiting with baited breath to get the images from one of our favorite photographers, the amazing Augie Chang. Anytime we work with Augie, we know that the photos are going to be GORGEOUS, and this wedding was no exception. We are so excited to share this beautiful wedding with you!

Kylie and Kevin Get Married at Casa Real!

Kylie and Kevin tied the knot on October 26th, 2012 at the gorgeous Casa Real at the Ruby Hill Winery, and we were on hand to DJ and provide the Event Lighting for their night. Our DJ Nick was able to capture a couple sneak peak shots, but check back in a few days to see some more photos their photographer, Allison of Allison Stahl Studio & Design took. She was awesome to work with!

We love how the Scrolling Leaves GOBO wash looks in champagne. So soft and romantic!

Kylie and Kevin incorporated a lot of great details throughout the night, including this homemade Olallieberry jam, which served as favors. The deep purple color accentuated the couple’s color scheme perfectly, not to mention it was probably DELICIOUS!

Perhaps our favorite detail was Kylie’s unique bouquet…which was crafted entirely from beautiful brooches! We have seen this trend a lot on Pinterest, but never at an actual wedding, and holy cow was it gorgeous!!

Congratulations Kylie and Kevin!

Kim and Stephen Get Married at Wente Vineyards!

Nick recently had the opportunity to DJ Kim and Stephen’s wedding on the beautiful Terrace Lawn at Wente Vineyards on September 7th, 2012. The couple knew that they were going to have a small and intimate wedding, but they also knew that this small group was going to PARTY…and they sure lived up to that reputation!

Check out these GORGEOUS table arrangements! Jinger of The Flower House did an amazing job incorporating Kim and Stephen’s color palette of pale pink, peach, ivory and blush. The wedding was very small and intimate, so each table was able to enjoy a tall arrangement. The mix of roses, dahlias, and hydrangeas is just stunning!

Eli Pitta of Eli Photographer was their photographer for the night, and we are looking forward to getting some images from him. All of these photos were taken by Nick, so we hope you enjoy this sneak peek! Keep your eyes peeled to see some images when we get them from Eli.

Stephen and Kim decided to have both their reception and ceremony outside, and the weather couldn’t have been more perfect! It was a delightfully warm night, which kept the party going late into the night. The couple also decided to do a sophisticated sit down 5 course dinner, and as always Wente’s food was DELICIOUS.

We wish all the best to Kim and Stephen in their future together!

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Heroux!

The wedding celebration of Jennifer Moody and Christopher Heroux took place at Hotel Valencia on Santana Row in San Jose.  Not only did they choose to have their wedding at a fantastic hotel, but the ceremony took place on the rooftop terrace over looking San Jose’s gorgeous mountain views.  The weather was perfect and the sunset was absolutely picturesque!

We had a great time with Jennifer and Chris. They were a fun and outgoing couple who knew how to party, and that made Nick’s job as a DJ easy!  After sunset the music grew louder and it was time for Jennifer and Chris to have their first dance.  They had chosen to choreograph a dance to the Lenny Kravitz ballad “I Belong To You”  and it was not to be missed!  Not only did they have a beautifully choreographed first dance, they also arranged for their friends to join them while they danced with their two kids to “The Time” by Black Eyed Peas. It was a heartwarming moment to see everyone together on the dance floor. After that, everybody joined in and had a great time dancing the night away. This party was definitely one for the ages!

Livermore Valley Wine Growers Auction

All the funds raised in the auction went to benefit the Children’s Skin Disease Foundation, Open Heart Kitchen, and the ValleyCare Foundation Mobile Health Unit. Click here to read more about this wonderful annual event!

Congratulations Meghan and Luke!

This past weekend, on Saturday February 19th, our DJ Nick had the opportunity to DJ the wedding of Meghan Spillane and Luke McMurray. The wedding and reception was held at the beautiful Palm Event Center in the Vineyard on a rainy evening, but as we all know rain on a wedding day is good luck!  Meghan and Luke tied the knot in an intimate ceremony in the Estate Room, where the background music was provided by “Elegant Touch of Strings”.  After the ceremony the guests moved into the Grand Ballroom to enjoy cocktail hour and the entertainment of a Photo Booth.  The Ballroom was decorated in a simple and elegant color scheme of white on white.  To help anchor the color palette, Jinger from The Flower House provided stunning flower arrangements, which really popped against the white backdrop. After dinner the party began. Meghan and Luke cut the cake provided by Primrose Bakery and laughed as they smashed into each other’s faces. Luke and Meghan shared their first dance as husband and wife to “Steady As We Go” by The Dave Matthews Band. All the guests had a blast tearing it up on the dance floor with the bride and groom, dancing to songs by Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, and Journey. The night finally came to an end for the newlyweds, as they were hoisted up into the air for the last dance.

Thank you so much Meghan and Luke for letting us be a part of your special day! We wish you all the best!

What A Memorable January 29th

On Saturday, January 29th, we had the opportunity to DJ 2 different weddings. Nick DJed and we also provided the lighting for the Julia Criswell and Kenny Verschelden wedding at Casa Real, and Kevin DJed the Kathleen Godkin and Andrew Adams wedding at Wente.

The Criswell/Vershelden ceremony was held in the Amber Room, and the lighting design they chose really helped to transform the room. They put the “Dream Grill” wash over the walls, and had a custom monogram projected over the fireplace. The couple went with a black and champagne color palette, which added an elegant and retro feel to the entire wedding.  The day was overcast, but the champagne uplights and washes made the Amber Room feel warm and inviting. Karl from Delford West provided the flowers, and Draper Photography was on hand to capture all the special moments.

The reception moved to the Grand Salon, and it was very much a celebratory and upbeat atmosphere. The bride and groom shared the first dance to “Glitter in the Air” by Pink, and the lyrics to that song resonated with all the guests, and everyone agreed it was the perfect song for this couple. Take a listen for yourself!

Across town at Wente, Kevin DJed the Godkin/Adams wedding, and since they only had 75 guests, they were able to hold the ceremony inside the Cresta Blanca Room. After the ceremony the room was changed over for cocktails and dancing. The couple chose a lavender and champagne color palette, and we provided the champagne uplights, which made the room cozy and intimate.

Kevin had a blast DJing the reception. It was a small group of people, but they were tearing up the dance floor! Kathleen and Andrew had a chance to do a lot of dancing, and you could tell they were enjoying every minute of it. Kathleen and her father danced to two songs for the Father/Daughter dance.  The first song was more of a traditional song, “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” by IZ and  after playing about a 1 and ½ minutes of that song, Kevin transitioned to “Benny and the Jets” by Elton John.  John (the Father of the bride) used to sing and dance with her while she was growing up, and it was heartwarming to witness such a special moment.  After about a minute into this song, her mom, brother and sister spontaneously joined them on the dance floor.  The family danced as one big group. and it was a really beautiful moment for them and the rest of the guests.

When it was time for the bride and groom to share their first dance as a couple, they chose  “Just Breathe” by Pearl Jam.  This was the first time that Kevin had ever had a bride and groom select this song for their first dance and it was absolutely perfect for this couple.  Several guests were shocked to find out Pearl Jam sang the song, as it was incredibly romantic and tender.  Check it out for yourselves:

Thanks so much to both Julia and Kenny, and Kathleen and Andrew for letting us be a part of your special day. We wish you all the best in the future!

Karmen and Calvin’s Wedding at Casa Real

Karmen Li and Calvin Lu were married  on Saturday, January 8th in a beautiful ceremony at Casa Real at the Ruby Hill Winery. They exchanged vows in the Amber Room, and it was truly an elegant sight to behold. Carl of Delford West Flowers and Gifts provided the bride’s beautiful bouquet and all of the floral arrangements. Amanda, of Chasing Glimpses was able to photograph some spectacular images throughout the evening. Our wonderful videographers, Fallan and Jillian, were there as well to capture all the unforgettable moments from the evening.

The reception was held in the Grand Salon, and although the day was cloudy and wintry, the color palette of green and yellow really helped to brighten the atmosphere inside. Our very own Gaby Weiman served as the DJ and MC for the reception, and she made sure to get everybody on the dance floor. Karmen and Calvin shared their first dance as a couple to “You and Me” by Lifehouse. It was a simply choreographed waltz, but absolutely breathtaking to watch. Karmen and her Father shared a dance to “Greased Lightning”. The Father of the Bride was wearing a tuxedo t-shirt, and you could tell that the two of them were having an absolute blast cutting a rug together! Before long, the entire bridal party joined in and they all finished the dance together. It was a really neat moment!

Thank you so much Karmen and Calvin for inviting us to be a part of your special day and we wish you all the best!

John and Amanda’s Wedding, Palm Event Center

In addition to hiring FSES for videography, John and Amanda hired me to be the DJ for their wedding on May 29, 2009 at the Palm Event Center in Pleasanton, California. The morning of the 29th, they had a traditional Catholic ceremony at St. Michaels Church in Livermore, California.  It was a small, intimate ceremony for the family.  John and Amanda then had a second ceremony on the patio at the Palm Event Center for their friends and family. The bride had designed the ballroom at the Palm Event Center to look like Cinderella’s Ball. The Palm Event Center staff set up two buffets that went with the chosen theme.  I was able to work with Sylvain Gentile for the first time. Wow, what can I say?  His work was amazing! Sylvain also took photos from the ceremony, placed them on his laptop, and made a slideshow for everyone to see at the bar. Amanda wanted to do something different for the Father/Daughter dance; she had me play two songs. They started off slow dancing to the song “My Little Girl” by Tim McGraw and then I turned on “Honky Tonk Man” by Dwight Yokum, where they danced country swing. After the cake cutting, the party started and everyone danced the night away. I really believed they could have gone all night. Instead of going on a honeymoon, John and Amanda bought a house where they will be relaxing for the next week. Congratulations, John and Amanda! I wish the two of you the best of luck.
