How-To: Get Parents Involved

We get it – when you’re planning a wedding, the last thing you want is an overbearing parent or two to think they can take charge of every last detail of your big day. That being said, there are ways to involve your parents in your wedding planning without losing control – it is your day, for that matter!

Talk it out

First and foremost, you’ll need to talk with your partner to come to an agreement on which parents will get involved and in what capacity. Will they be joining to pick out a venue? Cake tasting? You’ll want to find a happy balance to ensure that no parent feels left out. After you agree on the terms of parental involvement, the next step is to talk to the parents. Be gentle, but firm – make sure all parents are aware that you want them to be involved but, at the end of the day, it is your wedding.

Ask for Feedback

Remember – your parents have already gone through the wedding planning process before, so they may have some unique insight to help you on your way. They can be a great source of advice and also a great place to bounce ideas off. You may also want to get their feedback on the parts of the wedding that they will be involved in – what song would the father of the bride like to dance to? Who will be walking the bride down the aisle?

Set Boundaries

Regardless of any talk, some parents might still think it’s their job to take control of the wedding. There is nothing wrong with setting some boundaries to keep the wedding planning in your hands. Speak with them kindly and ensure that you respect their opinions, but you want your wedding to reflect your relationship with your partner – and who knows that better than the two of you?

Finally, don’t let your parents or soon-to-be in-laws bring stress into the planning process. What’s most important is that you and your partner tie the knot with your closest family and friends around you – remind your parents that the best thing they could possibly do for you is to simply be there and support you on your special day.
