Is Videography Worth the Cost?

Imagine you spend months (or even years) planning the wedding of your dream just for the day to be over in the blink of an eye. All the emotions, key memorable moments, dances (the flower girl was running down the aisle making everybody laugh!), all of it gone with the wind. Just think: If a picture can say a thousand words, how much more does a video that captures it all? Rest assured, videography is one thing you don’t want to exclude from your budget!

The truth is that couples barely remember anything from their wedding day. The whole day is a whirlwind, filled with things to do and people to talk to all day.

With all of your time spent taking photos or greeting guests one by one, is it really possible to soak it in and remember it all? Everybody plays a vital role on your wedding day and videographers understand the role of telling the story of YOUR day, so you get a lifelong heirloom.

Here’s what you get from videography services at your wedding:

You’ll see things you never saw.

Your videographer will not be glued to your hip like your photographer. While you’re busy getting the perfect sunset picture, your videographer is going to town, recording the special moments with the people celebrating your love with you. You’ll get to relive the moments all over again and see the little things that you missed while you were busy.

Your videographer will float throughout the event, capturing moments between guests, the dance floor, bouquet toss — you get the picture. They’ll get everything on camera!  With only two eyes, there is only so much you can see on your wedding day. A cherished video that captures the many angles of your day will let you appreciate your special day as often as you’d like.

You’ll have an extra set of hands on site.

Although videographers spend most of their time on-site shooting, they are readily available to support other vendors when they’re not. Like every person working at your wedding, a videographer knows it is all about you!

If an extra set of hands is needed to make your wedding perfect, they will jump in and help. Ultimately, if everything is marching to the beat of your tune, your video will be replaying the melody of your heart (cue in heart emojis!),

You’ll have memories for life.

Photos are lifelong keepsakes, but what are lights and cameras without some action? There’s nothing quite like footage that captures every step, every smile, and every kiss. Nothing beats hearing your vows in real-time, the crinkles on your nose during the wedding speech, or your uncle lighting up the dance floor. Now, imagine listening to your future grandchildren giggle at your inside jokes — isn’t that the sweetest sound?

With your big day coming and going so fast, holding onto every moment is challenging.. Your video will be the perfect evidence that your wedding day was as real and magical as your love. You don’t want to skip out on reliving your special day for all the years to come, trust!

Should I hire a videographer?

When you’re planning your wedding and putting together your event day team, it can seem a bit overwhelming when you look at all of the pieces that go into it. Of course, there are some vendors that are required a wedding – a venue, a photographer and a caterer, for example. The challenge can be deciding what else is a necessity. For many, a floral designer, a DJ and a planner fall under that realm, as does a videographer.

Videography seems like an add-on for many, whereas others see it as a must-have. When making the decision of whether or not to hire a videographer, it’s important to ask yourself certain questions.

Does it fit into your budget?
Videography is a unique service that is designed to capture your wedding in a way that you can hold onto forever. However, it does come with a price so be sure that it fits into your budget before you make the plunge.

Are you happy with wedding photos?
For some, a wedding photo album is all they need to capture their special celebration. If that’s the case, then a videographer may not be necessary.

Are there any special moments you want to capture?
If you are planning for a surprise guest appearance, a choreographed dance or you simply want to hold onto your vows for years to come, then you would do well to have a videographer on board to capture all of those keepsake moments.

Can you imagine your day without a videographer?
One of the biggest regrets we hear from brides is that they didn’t have a videographer because they’d like to look back at all the little parts of their wedding. The big day itself will be a whirlwind of activity, so oftentimes brides and grooms get caught up in what they’re doing and aren’t always noticing all of the other things happening around the event. If you think you’ll regret not being able to look back at your special day, then a videographer is certainly a must.

At the end of the day, the choice to have your wedding recorded is up to you and the priorities you’ve set for your wedding.

Ask Kevin: When Should I Book?

Hi Kevin,

I just got engaged a couple weeks ago, and we just set our date for late 2014. I want to get everything locked down now, but I don’t know if I am starting too early. When is the best time to start looking for a DJ, Videographer, and Lighting vendor?

Thanks,

Marina

Hi Marina!

Thank you so much for your question!  Typically the best time to start looking for a DJ and videographer would be about 6-9 months before your wedding, if not sooner. This gives you time to get to know both vendors throughout the planning process, as well as get two important vendors booked and out of the way leaving more time to enjoy the engagement period.

As for lighting, you should begin contacting vendors 9-12 months before your event. Lighting sets the whole mood for the event, and as a result waiting could be risky. The last thing you want to do is wait until a week before your wedding to make the decision to book a lighting vendor only to find out they are all out of those beautiful chandeliers you had your heart set on. You can always add to your lighting down the road, but getting the basics taken care of early is the best way to ensure that you will be taken care of. I always recommend to book early, because then there will be less stress about what your venue is going to look like as the day creeps closer.

In fact, when it comes to vendors I will always tell my clients “If you like a vendor, and you mesh well, STOP shopping and BOOK!” Chances are if you wait and shop around and then decide that the one vendor you met with 6 weeks ago was the best, they will be booked and you will be sorry that you ever bothered meeting the others. Too many times there are clients that wait to book a DJ and by the time they do, that DJ is no longer available for their wedding!

The sooner you book those major vendors, the better. There is no better feeling than knowing who your DJ will be, how your videographer is going to shoot your wedding, and what your venue is going to look like on your big day, 6 months before the wedding. This gives you more time to focus on your florist, cake designer, photographer, and how amazing you are going to look when you take that walk down the aisle towards your soul mate, not to mention actually having the time to enjoy your engagement!

Karmen and Calvin’s Wedding at Casa Real

Karmen Li and Calvin Lu were married  on Saturday, January 8th in a beautiful ceremony at Casa Real at the Ruby Hill Winery. They exchanged vows in the Amber Room, and it was truly an elegant sight to behold. Carl of Delford West Flowers and Gifts provided the bride’s beautiful bouquet and all of the floral arrangements. Amanda, of Chasing Glimpses was able to photograph some spectacular images throughout the evening. Our wonderful videographers, Fallan and Jillian, were there as well to capture all the unforgettable moments from the evening.

The reception was held in the Grand Salon, and although the day was cloudy and wintry, the color palette of green and yellow really helped to brighten the atmosphere inside. Our very own Gaby Weiman served as the DJ and MC for the reception, and she made sure to get everybody on the dance floor. Karmen and Calvin shared their first dance as a couple to “You and Me” by Lifehouse. It was a simply choreographed waltz, but absolutely breathtaking to watch. Karmen and her Father shared a dance to “Greased Lightning”. The Father of the Bride was wearing a tuxedo t-shirt, and you could tell that the two of them were having an absolute blast cutting a rug together! Before long, the entire bridal party joined in and they all finished the dance together. It was a really neat moment!

Thank you so much Karmen and Calvin for inviting us to be a part of your special day and we wish you all the best!

Lindsy + Ryan / Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay / Videography

We had a great time shooting a wedding at the amazing Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay.  The scene was set for a perfect day as Lindsy and Ryan married one another overlooking the ocean.  Lindsy and Ryan were such a great couple to work with as you will see in the video as their fun and playful attitude shined through.  Please enjoy highlights of them as they shared the day where they became husband and wife.

Jessica & Michael Harper / Palm Event Center / Wedding Videography

We would like to share a highlight reel from a beautiful wedding we shot at the Palm Event Center in Pleasanton, CA.  The idea of the video was to create an old fashion film effect with a few modern twists along the way. The bride asked us to create a video with three words in mind:  Creative, elegant, and energetic.  We felt we were able to accomplish her request in this 8-minute highlight reel.

Wedding Background:

The reception and ceremony took place at the stunning Palm Event Center in Pleasanton, CA, the cake was by Bev Tanaka and the florist was Jinger from The Flower House.  We also had the privilege of providing the Event Lighting and Disc Jockey service.

Enjoy!
