As the excitement and jitters start to wane, you might be wondering what the next step is. Do not fear – we want to offer some tips about what your first steps should be in planning the perfect wedding for you and your one and only.

Of course, your first step is to tell people! There are plenty of creative ways to announce your new engagement – check out Pinterest (our guess is that you’ve already heard of it!) for some inspiration. After you’ve had a chance to get your friends and family in on the fun, it’s time for you and your partner to sit down and discuss the basic details for your big day.

Things to think about include:

  1. Wedding date – What time of year do we want our wedding to be? Just be careful about choosing a date around major holidays to avoid any travel headaches. You may also want to check an event calendar local to your desired region to avoid any conflicts.
  2. Guest list – Create a preliminary guest list for the wedding. The list may change slightly as the planning process goes on, but it’s best to have a good idea of how many people will be attending the wedding.
  3. Budget –This can be a sticky subject, so aim to settle on a budget that will satisfy the both of you. The key to a happy couple is compromise. If either of you have concerns, be sure to express them early on.
  4. Wedding location – Do we want our wedding to be local or do we want to travel for a destination wedding? Keep in mind out-of-town guests (see #2). After deciding this and with the budget in mind (see #3), you can start researching venues in the area that you decide upon together. Once you are able to book the venue, then you can really get the ball rolling!

We probably don’t have to tell you that there should be plenty of discussions between you and your spouse-to-be in these early stages. It’s important to stay on the same page and, if someone starts to disagree, remember the reason behind the marriage – it is more than just a wedding, it is about the love and happiness that you share with your partner. That is what matters most!
