From the gorgeous centerpiece chandelier to the glittering backdrop, that dreamy feel is effortlessly achieved. Event Lighting Q&A

Lighting is critical to the success of your big day. You will want more than a few light switches controlling the look of your space, so it’s best to have a professional handle it! The last thing you want is to poor lighting reflecting in your pictures and videos of your big day after all the hard work you put into planning and preparing. After all, your pictures are the best way to carry the memories of your big day forever!

Uplighting

Photography Credit: Ether & Smith

Q: Do I really need a lighting designer?

A: Yep – lighting design is what brings the rest of your wedding together! Even the most beautiful flowers won’t look so stunning under stuffy overhead lighting. An expert will ensure that your event space is well-lit while highlighting all of the amazing details.

Q: Do I need to have technical AND decorative lighting?

A: Yes! Technical and decorative lighting have very different purposes. While decorative lighting is intended to dress up your venue and add more dynamism to the space, technical lighting ensures everything is well-lit and functional. For instance, uplighting adds color to the room while spotlights highlight specific elements like the cake table or dance floor!

Event Lighting Q&A

Photography Credit: Ether & Smith

Q: How much can I expect to spend on event lighting?

That ultimately depends on how large your venue is, the size of your guest list, and your overall vision for the space. We recommend setting aside at least $1,500 in your budget, but your wedding planner and lighting designer can help you land on a more accurate estimate.

Q: When should I book a lighting designer for my wedding?

There is no such thing as too soon — especially with this year’s wedding boom! We suggest securing your wedding lighting contract shortly after booking your venue and wedding planner, as lighting will play a significant role in your planning process’s overall design and timeline.

While you might save a few dollars by nixing the lighting specialists, all the elements you invested time planning and putting together will suffer without a professional highlighting every last detail.

Casa Real Wedding | Tiffany + Jesse

Today, we’re bringing a truly stunning Casa Real wedding with you as we celebrate Tiffany and Jesse’s nuptials! It’s always a pleasure working at Casa Real, especially when we get to work with a couple as fun-loving and open-minded as these two.

Their sweet wedding ceremony brought elegance to the forefront with soft uplighting, gold accents, and beautiful blooms.

And as we move to the reception space, you’ll notice some familiar floral arrangements dressing up the sweetheart table! (Although you may miss it, seeing that our crystal beaded chandelier really stole the show.)

The starburst chandelier really highlighted the dance floor, putting Tiffany and Jesse center-stage for their first dance. And of course, their guests loved breaking it down “under the stars” as the night went on!

A simple, classy crystal chandelier strung above the sweetheart table added an elegant touch to the space, giving them the perfect photo op alongside blush blooms and greenery.

However, it wasn’t all fab design! Tiffany and Jesse’s guests were treated to a fully immersive experience with yard games like Connect 4 and Jenga, as well as a DIY horchata bar (YUM!).

So won’t you join us in celebrating these sweet lovebirds? Cheers to you, Tiffany and Jesse!

Adam Clark, Adam J. Clark Photography {Creative Partner Spotlight}

This week, we’re highlighting the owner and lead photographer of Adam J. Clark Photography… Adam Clark, himself!

You may recognize Adam’s name from the gorgeous photos of his that we’ve shared on our blog and social media. He’s truly a visionary behind the lens, and we love collaborating with him to bring our clients’ events to life!

Let’s see what Adam Clark has to share!

adam clark

Tell us a bit about your professional background. What brought you to the event industry?

I have long had a passion for art, specifically photography. When I was young I was fascinated by my Grandfather’s Nikomat camera. My closest childhood friend’s father had what I thought was the coolest camera and case. I loved all the gear and gadgets that went into creating images with a camera.

As a little kid, I recall having an old Kodak Brownie in my toy collection and then on my 8th birthday I received a Kodak Instamatic. To be honest I believe I may have been a little disappointed. I had a camera, it was old, but I had one I think I was lobbying more for a BB gun on that birthday. However this gift turned out to inspire me.

Years later my father sold the family station wagon and took the proceeds and purchased my family’s first 35 mm camera. That did it, I was hooked! I took that camera everywhere and probably cost my father a ton in film and processing taking images of anything and everything. Then came time for my senior portraits, something that I had looked forward to for years. This is what turned my interest to portraiture. I loved the whole process.

After graduating high school I attended college thinking I would one day work towards an engineering degree. This seemed like a logical idea. In reality I wanted to be a photographer but in my head I thought, “That’s not a job, it’s a fantasy. Being a photographer isn’t a career it’s a hobby. Being an engineer, that’s a career.” I was right and wrong, being a photographer is a fantasy and not a real job, but it is a career. It is the fantasy, non-real job, that has been my career for nearly 25 years!

Anyway, after college I attended the Art Institute of Seattle and I earned a degree in Commercial Photography. After graduation I was fortunate to find a part-time job with a local photo studio, Crawford’s Photography in Redmond, WA. Here I learned my craft, and my passion for photography and portraiture grew. I was able to meet wonderful people that turned into fantastic clients and friends. I was given the opportunity to get to know and document their lives through my portraiture. I have clients that I photographed as babies, then high school seniors, then weddings and then their babies. It is a mind-blowing experience that I so very much cherish! I went on to run, manage and eventually own the Studio. This was my only job, career, fantasy until I started Adam J. Clark Photography.

In my down time I love spending time with my dog, visiting with family and friends around the country, SCUBA diving, running, skiing, hiking and staying fit. I also very much love to visit Hawaii, and live the Aloha spirit. Currently I am based out of Livermore, CA. However I am available on the Big Island of Hawaii. Again, thank you so much for visiting my web site. I hope we have the opportunity to meet and I hope you will consider me for all your portrait and photographic needs. I love what I do and I am dedicated to making your portraits a unique and special work of art, worthy of viewing by future generations.

What do you love about your job?

I love meeting people, making them happy and being exposed to different cultures and traditions.

If you could share one wedding planning tip with an engaged couple, what would you tell them?

Be on time and listen to the professionals. We are here to help take advantage of our knowledge, that more than one I know LOL

We are big Adam Clark fans at Fantasy Sound and we’re always looking forward to the next time we get to work with him. Cheers to you, Adam!

New Press: Popped! | Holiday Proposals

With the holidays upon us, we loved seeing Kevin’s latest feature on Popped! as he speaks to planning meaningful holiday proposals!

According to The Knot, peak proposal season falls between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day with 40% (!!) of engagements taking place between November and February. The most popular days are, of course, for holiday proposals:

  • Christmas Day
  • Christmas Eve
  • Valentine’s Day
  • New Year’s Day
  • New Year’s Eve
  • Thanksgiving

With Thanksgiving behind us, we are in the early stages of engagement season — and we can already feel the excitement brewing in the wedding industry!

So this feature on Popped! is a timely roundup if you’re considering popping the question in the next few months. Read it here.

popped - holiday proposals

Here’s a tidbit from the article, as Kevin suggests how to celebrate holiday proposals:

Kevin Dennis of Fantasy Sound Event Services says, “One of the best things about planning a proposal around the holidays is that your family and friends will likely already be in town, so you can organize a celebration fairly easy without drawing suspicion. Whether you choose to hold an impromptu engagement party or pop the question during a holiday get-together, you’ll be able to make the occasion even more special by having your loved ones involved.”

winter weddings

4 Reasons We Love Winter Weddings

Winter is quite a romantic season, making it perfect for saying “I do.” There’s no better time for couples to cozy up by a fire, go ice skating, or enjoy a lovely evening stroll. Here in California, we all love a little winter coziness and are complete suckers for dreamy winter weddings!

winter weddings

Whether you’re still deciding on your wedding season or you’re eagerly anticipating a wintry celebration of your own, here are some of our favorite things about winter weddings!

You can get creative with your menu.

Whether you’re going for a grand affair with hundreds of guests or prefer to keep the celebration small and intimate, food and drinks should never be overlooked when planning your wedding!

What’s great about winter weddings is that you don’t have to limit attendees to the usual chicken or beef options. The cold weather means anything goes—as long as it’s hot! You can get more creative with the menu by serving crowd-pleasing comfort foods and seasonal cocktails and beverages. Hearty soups, stews, classic mac and cheese, spiked apple cider, hot cocoas, and mulled wine are all worth considering.

You get your pick of some beautiful color palettes.

Who said winter weddings had to be boring or monochromatic? Couples often add touches of deep jewel tones such as red, burgundy, navy blue, and emerald green in their decorations. They add an element of elegance, and are quite a sight when paired with metallic accents! And with or without snow, the rich colors make a striking contrast against the overall grayness of the weather.

A winter wedding also never fails to create a romantic and cozy vibe. If you want to set a homey, inviting mood on your big day, you can add touches of rich browns and tans to evoke campfires and snug log cabins.

You will have more vendor availability with less budget.

Your wedding is one of the most important days in your life, and we know you want to create the most magical, memorable celebration possible. The vendors you pick can make or break your event, so it’s vital to put a lot of careful thought into choosing them! In the winter, vendors have more availability, so you’ll have a better chance at creating your dream team.

And of course, you also need to consider your budget because you don’t want to dip into your long-term savings or go into debt planning your wedding. Luckily, you have a good shot at booking highly-rated, sought-after vendors, and snagging their services at a lower rate! Why? Because winter is “off-season” in the wedding industry, so you’ll often see a drop in prices. It’s almost too good to be true!

Your guests will be eager to join.

Many couples choose to say their “I do’s” during the summer. By hosting yours in the winter, you don’t have to worry about competing with other weddings or summer vacations! Plus, most of your guests will likely have additional time off for the holidays, so it won’t take much convincing to extend their breaks to accommodate your wedding. It’ll be much easier to get all of your favorite people in the world together for the celebration of the season!

As they say, winter is the most wonderful time of the year! If a wintry wonderland wedding is in your sights, you’re making a great choice. Enjoy your wedding preparations!

4 Clever Holiday Event Décor Ideas

The holiday season is upon us! This is the perfect time to celebrate and create wonderful memories that you and your loved ones will remember fondly for years to come. If you’re planning a holiday event this time of year, make sure to bring the cheer! You can start by adding some decorative elements and embellishments to your venue to create a welcoming and festive vibe.

holiday event

Venue: Casa Real

Are you struggling to figure out how to decorate your holiday event? This blog post is perfect for you! Read on for tips and ideas to get your holiday event just right.

Wow your guests with interactive food stations

An excellent way to impress your guests is with carefully selected, interactive food stations. These can complement your traditional catering, plus you can jazz them up with thematic décor. The idea is to offer variety and interactivity by getting your guests involved as they prepare their own food or beverage.

Since the holiday season always calls for hot drinks, you can set up a bar where guests can make their own hot chocolate or peppermint coffee. And for eventgoers with a sweet tooth, you can prepare a buffet of holiday treats like sugar cookies, gingerbread biscuits, and cupcakes they can decorate before eating!

Not only do these food stations offer guests a unique and fun experience, but they also encourage them to mingle.

Adorn your holiday event space with natural elements

A few pinecones, chestnuts, berries, and sprigs of greenery can add some flair to your holiday décor. By using natural elements, you are able to set a warm and cozy mood, and we all know that this is what the holidays are all about!

Have fun with holiday event signage

The signage at your event serves various functions. They can provide information, directions, and even reminders to your guests. But don’t forget to make sure they match your theme to tie the look of your holiday event together!

Consider alluding to Santa, the holidays, Christmas, Chanukah, or winter when crafting your signage. For instance, imagine calling an interactive food station, the Elf-Service Station (Get it? Self-service)! Or, you could add a touch of humor to your decor with “better not pout” tabletop signs.

These are just a few fun ideas to get your creative juices flowing, but the possibilities are endless!

Place some hanging string lights

If you’re going for a winter wonderland feel for your holiday event, try hanging some ice blue, bright white, or warm white string lights to create the perfect ambiance. You can also opt to buy string lights with a snowflake design. With the proper lighting, you are sure to keep things merry and bright!

Regardless of how you decorate your holiday event, remember to strive for a consistent and cohesive look for your event. Choose a theme and matching color palette, then stick to them. Happy holidays!

7 Wedding Traditions to Know and Love

Engaged couples are not the only ones excited for their big day—so are their loved ones! During the planning stage, your family and close friends will often offer suggestions on how to make the festivities more meaningful and memorable. While it is ultimately up to you and your partner how your event will go, many wedding traditions are worth exploring if they feel right for both of you.

If you want to learn more, this blog will round up some of the more interesting wedding customs you can consider for your celebration.

Without further ado, let’s jump right into some favorite wedding traditions!

wedding traditions

Bouquet and Garter Toss

This is one of the most popular wedding traditions out there, but how does it work? For the bouquet toss, the single women in attendance attempt to catch the bouquet tossed by the bride. Whoever succeeds is believed to be the next to marry. For the garter toss, the groom goes under the bride’s gown to remove her leg garter, which he tosses to a group of eager bachelors. The person who caught the garter, in turn, places it on the leg of the one who caught the bouquet.

Door Games

If you’re looking for an exciting and lighthearted wedding tradition, door games are perfect for your celebration. For many Chinese couples, these games are a must on the morning of their wedding day. It revolves around the groom proving his worth and dedication to the bride by working hand-in-hand with his groomsmen to surpass a series of tests and challenges prepared by her bridesmaids. This activity will surely elicit lots of smiles and laughter from participants and spectators alike!

Releasing of Doves

Commonly practiced in Filipino weddings, a pair of male and female doves are released at the end of the ceremony to represent the couple’s desire for a harmonious relationship, as they symbolize unity and peace. Doves are also known to mate for life! It’s perfect for those who want to create a romantic, meaningful ending to their wedding.

The Sugar Cube

Greek brides typically tuck a sugar cube into their glove or bouquet on their wedding day, as it’s believed to bring the couple happiness in their new life together. So if you want to sweeten your marriage, it wouldn’t hurt to follow their lead!

Parent Dances

Looking for a special way to pay tribute to your parents on your wedding day? How about a traditional father-daughter and mother-son dance? Couples can also choose to share this sweet moment with other cherished family members, like grandparents, step-parents, godparents, siblings, aunts, or uncles.

Money Dances

The money dance is customary in many cultures. In exchange for a dance, guests pin bills onto the bride or groom’s clothing with good wishes. This long-standing wedding tradition serves to usher in wealth and prosperity in the couple’s marriage. Additionally, it’s a fun and interactive way for the couple to spend some time with their wedding guests!

Carrying the Bride Over the Threshold

In the Middle Ages, people believed that evil spirits lived on the threshold of new homes and would attack brides through the soles of their feet. Therefore, the groom carried his bride across the threshold to protect her. Today, it’s a romantic way to whisk the bride away from the party as they begin their new life together.

These are just a few of the wedding traditions you can incorporate into your special day. Of course, you can follow these old customs or start some of your own—feel free to mix it up! Ultimately, the most important thing is for your wedding to feel meaningful to you and your partner.

Fall Wedding Trends to Know in 2021

With autumn in the air, it’s time to shift our summer mindsets to appreciate the beauty of a picture-perfect fall wedding.

fall wedding

Cooler temps, falling leaves, and a whole new vibe to work with make it easy to host a fall wedding to remember! Here are the key trends to know as we head into the harvest season.

Rich color palettes

Burgundy, gold, orange, brown, purple — many couples find inspiration for their fall wedding in nature and we are here for it! Paired with lush greenery, wood textures, and other natural elements, using a fall-themed color palette makes for a lovely design. Consider using some soft uplighting or dynamic gobo washes to add an extra special touch that levels up the vibe.

Cozy bonfires

With the pandemic lingering, outdoor weddings remain the go-to choice for engaged couples in 2021. And what’s a fall wedding without a roaring bonfire to gather ’round? Perfect for roasting marshmallows, sipping hot cocoa, and cozying up with loved ones! Consider adding some soft textures to the seating arrangement. Think chunky knit blankets or cashmere scarves for guests — a sweet way to show your guests a great time.

Weekday weddings

Thanks to a year’s worth of postponed events, the industry is experiencing a wedding boom keeping calendars packed for months. For those wanting to tie the knot in the near future, weekday weddings have become an excellent way to fit their nuptials into a busy schedule! It’s not just convenient, though. Weekday weddings are also a cost-effective alternative to the average weekend wedding. Plus, it’s the perfect excuse to extend your celebration into the weekend with group activities for guests who want to stick around!

Micro-nuptials

Less is more; at least, that’s how it’s trending in the wedding industry! Couples are trimming down their guest lists and, with it, realizing the possibilities that open up with a smaller wedding. Since your budget goes further with fewer guests, you can invest more into the elements that matter most. Unique venues, upgraded food + beverage choices, elevated design + décor, and more face time with guests — there are many benefits to micro-weddings!

How to Budget for Wedding Lighting + Entertainment

Marriage is an important milestone in a couple’s lives and is often seen as the beginning of happily ever after. A wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime event, so it’s no surprise that many couples want to celebrate it in the best way possible. This involves months, or even years, of planning every detail so that their vision comes to life and everything is perfect on the big day. One of the trickiest yet most crucial parts of wedding planning is the budget.

A wedding doesn’t have to be expensive to be beautiful or meaningful. The couple will likely appreciate their wedding more if they didn’t have to go into debt for it!

Good lighting, however, is one thing couples should not scrimp on. Not only does it allow the guests to appreciate the elements in the room, but it also sets the perfect mood and ambiance. The cost involved can range from $200 to $5,000, depending on the chosen venue and the couple’s requirements. For example, outdoor weddings often need more lighting, for practicality as well as aesthetics.

And of course, while guests may forget the exact flowers in the bride’s bouquet, the flavor of the wedding cake, or the calligraphy on the invitation, they’ll never forget the experience! The ceremony, the dancing, and the music are what your guests will remember forever. Entertainment is one thing you shouldn’t overlook when planning your event.

wedding budget

For those who need help budgeting for their wedding, here are some valuable tips:

Organize your wedding budget.

Whether you are planning a simple wedding or a grand affair, an organized wedding budget spreadsheet is a must! This simple tool allows you to keep track of how funds were designated along the way and how much money is left. It will keep all the important numbers in one place and help you make more realistic decisions.

Work together to budget for your must-haves.

Whether it’s the budget or event details, it is vital for couples to be on the same page about their wedding. This involves discussing and understanding each other’s preferences. The final decision should take into account both their joint and individual needs to ensure the wedding budget is allocated to keep both partners happy.

Do your research from the start.

Do you want to book a DJ or a ten-piece band? Have you decided whether a custom monogram wash or a gorgeous chandelier is needed? What you agree on determines how much you spend, so do your research beforehand. Then, when you start interviewing vendors and getting more involved in the process, you’ll know exactly what you need!

Connect with lighting & entertainment companies.

Getting estimates from the companies you’re interested in will help create a realistic budget for the wedding and reception. Plus, it will help you compare packages to ensure you’re getting what you want at the best rate. Just be sure to check in on companies’ online reviews to ensure they’ve kept other clients happy!

There you have it! Having a detailed budget plan from the start can save you an incredible amount of time, energy, and resources. If you need more help with your wedding lighting and entertainment, let’s chat!

4 Tips to Keep Wedding Guests on the Dance Floor

When you think about the weddings you’ve attended in the past, what do you remember most? Do you remember the flavor of the cake or what was served for dinner? Or, are your greatest memories about breaking it down on the dance floor with your favorite people?

Thought so.

When you’re planning your wedding, it’s essential to book a DJ that will serve as an expert emcee and infuse your wedding night with energy.

Here are four other ways to get the party going!

dance floor

Kick off the party the right way

Transitioning from dinner to dancing can be challenging if you don’t take the energy up a notch. Fortunately, a great DJ will know just the trick! With the right set of upbeat songs and a natural hype master on the mic, your guests will be fighting their way to the dance floor. Consider starting out with a dance competition to build the excitement from the start of the evening!

Set the mood with lighting

Even the best tunes won’t inspire your guests to boogie if the lighting isn’t right. Stuffy overhead lighting will have people feeling uncomfortable and unlikely to hit the dance floor. Dim the lights and use some colored uplights to create the right ambience to match your playlist. If you want to go the extra mile, add in some romantic market lights for a sweet and inviting setting.

Mix it up throughout the night

Not everyone shares the same taste in music, so be sure to mix up your playlist with songs from a variety of genres. When you work with an experienced wedding DJ, they will help you settle on the perfect blend of top 40s, hip hop, jazz, oldies, and dance music. That way, you can be certain that all of your guests will have a chance to show off their moves.

Set a shining example on the dance floor

If the dance floor is looking sparse, hop up and show them how it’s done! At a wedding, guests tend to follow the newlyweds’ lead — so, go on and get your groove on. Pull up your wedding party members to join you and you’ll be filling the dance floor before you know it. Did someone say dance circle!?

Happy Friday – this week, we’re wrapping it up with some gorgeous, romantic wedding vibes!

Technical vs. Decorative Lighting: What do I need for my event?

When it comes to lighting up your wedding, you need to know all the options that are available to you. What colors fit your palette? What needs to be staged in a special way? Will technical lighting do? Or does decorative lighting need to be included to fit the bill?

The short answer is: You need both! However, knowing the difference between the two will help you understand where they fit into your design plans, ensuring you procure all of the lighting equipment you need for your wedding.

Let’s tackle each of them:

Technical Lighting

Simply put, technical lighting is used for functional, practical purposes. Composed of LED lights, technical lights use less energy and are ideal for spaces with limited power.

Though technical lighting sounds drab, there is a wow factor to them for you to consider! Are you thinking of having a spotlight at your sweetheart table? Or, would you like a gobo wash as an accent wall? Love the idea of your monogrammed initials on the dance floor? All of this gets realized with technical lights. Yep, spotlights and gobos are only possible with the right LED fixtures in place!

So, whether you want pin lighting to highlight your stunning tiered cake or a full-on stage behind the band, technical lighting is a must for getting your details in order.

decorative lighting

Decorative Lighting

Holding true to its name, decorative lighting is used to amp up the aesthetics of your venue. Unlike technical lighting, decorative lighting is not meant to actually light up your venue but more so to enhance designs and create the atmosphere.

Decorative lights bring the warmth of yellow hues that technical lights don’t provide, setting the mood for a lovely, intimate moment on your big day. It is very versatile and caters to every look, adding that extra oomph!

For example, simply adding colored uplighting to your venue will elevate your wedding design! The color options are endless, but be careful not to overdo it. Less is, indeed, more! Check out our blog, Colored Lighting: How to do it Right, for more colored lighting inspo.

Have you always dreamt of the starry night look? If so, string lights are for you! Or how about market lights that turn any venue into a place where the vibe is just right, and nobody wants to leave? Yes, please! Are you thinking of bringing on the drama? Go for marquee lights!

Wherever you want to add an extra little pizzazz, decorative lights are here to save the day.

Understandably, knowing the difference between lighting elements and what they do is complex. Nobody is asking you to become an expert, but a little bit of knowledge will go a long way when planning your dream wedding. Of course, a lighting professional will know exactly what you need and where — so don’t feel like you have to do this alone!
