Tell us a bit about your professional background. What brought you to the event industry?
In 2008, I was working for a large corporation and had recently purchased my first digital camera, a Nikon D40. At the time, I worked in internal communications, and I would often bring my camera to work and volunteer to photograph guest speakers and the occasional company event. Looking back, I really wasn’t very good yet. But I loved it.
One of my coworkers was getting married that spring outside of Scranton, Pennsylvania, and she asked if I would photograph her wedding. Armed with one camera, one flash, and a single 16 GB memory card (yes, I shot that first wedding entirely in JPG), I boarded a plane for what would become a truly life-changing experience.
The couple loved their photos, but more importantly, I realized how much I loved the experience itself. The energy, the emotion, the people, the storytelling. I knew this was something I wanted more of.
Fast forward to late 2015. I was laid off from my corporate job and decided to take a leap of faith and give this a real shot: full-time wedding photography.
More than 300 weddings and events later, countless friendships formed within the industry and with my couples, and I can honestly say I’m having just as much fun now as I did back then. Maybe even more.

What do you love most about your job?
One of the things I love most about this job is the people. I genuinely love connecting with people and getting a front-row seat to one of the most important days in a couple’s life.
I get to witness the quiet conversations, the tears, the laughter, and all of the love and emotion behind the day. There’s an energy to weddings that is hard to describe — the adrenaline starts during the drive to the venue and carries through the entire event.
I also love the creative side of what I do. My specialty is creating cinematic lighting and imagery, and there’s nothing quite like seeing a couple’s reaction when they look at the back of my camera and see themselves in a way they never expected. Those reactions, those expressions, and those moments make every bit of it worth it.

What’s the most memorable reaction you’ve experienced from a couple on their wedding day?
I’ll admit it, I’m a sucker for a first look.
Why? Because it is often the most raw and emotional moment of the entire wedding day. There is something incredibly powerful about two people seeing each other privately before everything officially begins. The nerves melt away, the emotions come pouring out, and the couple gets a chance to simply be together for a moment.
There are also practical benefits. You typically get more romantic portraits together, it helps calm pre-ceremony anxiety, and it can even free up enough time for the couple to actually enjoy part of their cocktail hour.
As for unforgettable reactions, one wedding immediately comes to mind.
I recently photographed a wedding where the maid of honor gave an incredibly heartfelt toast about the bride. This bride had experienced a tremendous amount of loss and heartache throughout her life, and every word spoken carried so much meaning and emotion behind it.
As photographers, we are always documenting the reactions. The couple, the parents, the guests. But we are also listening. We are paying attention to the story unfolding in real time.
When people say “there wasn’t a dry eye in the house,” that was absolutely true that night. Including me. I just hid my face behind my camera and kept shooting.
Those are the moments that stay with me the most. Where else can you show up for work and witness something so genuine and emotional that you feel a lump in your throat right alongside everyone else? It’s an incredible privilege.

If you could share one wedding planning tip with an engaged couple, what would you tell them?
If I could give couples just one piece of advice, it would be this: hire a seasoned wedding photographer whose work you truly love. And just as importantly, someone you genuinely connect with on a personal level.
Of course, it’s important to love their portfolio, but make sure you also ask to see one or two full wedding galleries. Anyone can showcase a handful of great images. A true professional consistently delivers throughout an entire wedding day, from beginning to end.
Wedding photography is absolutely an investment. We all have smartphones now, but not everyone is a wedding photographer. There is an incredible amount of preparation, anticipation, experience, and responsibility that goes into photographing a wedding well.
A great wedding photographer has to think quickly, adapt constantly, and problem-solve in real time. They need to anticipate fleeting moments before they happen, stay calm under pressure, work in difficult lighting, manage timelines, and somehow still remain creative throughout it all.
And sometimes that means jumping right into the middle of a packed, hot, sweaty dance floor to fully capture the energy and emotion of the night exactly as it felt. Those moments matter. All of them do.
