Tell us a bit about your professional background. What brought you to the event industry?

I fell in love with photography when I was in middle school and that passion has stayed with me. I had an incredible high school teacher who allowed me to hone in on my skills and taught me how to develop my images in the dark room – SO much fun! While I loved being artistic, 17 year old me was told I need to have a “real” job, so off to college I went.

I earned a B.S. in Kinesiology, followed by my M.A. in Education. I started teaching and in my second year, I was asked if I would be interested in taking over the yearbook. I enthusiastically said yes, and I once again picked up a camera. One thing lead to another and one day my husband tossed a packet of papers on my desk… It was my fictitious business name registration, business bank account, amongst other things. What a gift! I shot my first wedding in 2011 and never looked back.

What do you love about your job as the owner of Hazy Lane Studios?

Everything! I love helping build an efficient and effective timeline. I love the connection with my couples (and their families). I love crying during the ceremony (yes, I wear waterproof mascara)! I love dancing during the reception. I love the laughing, the joking, the smiles, and the hugs. But my favorite part is seeing the joy and love on grandparents faces (I miss my grandparents so much – and my favorite photo from my wedding is a simple snapshot of me dancing with my grandfather).

If you could share one wedding planning tip with an engaged couple, what would you tell them?

You do you. I know you want to make everyone happy, but your wedding day is about you. Do not feel pressured into doing anything that you’re uncomfortable with or think that you “have to” do something because of some old fashioned tradition. 17 years ago I allowed my bridesmaids to pick their own dress style and had “mismatching” tables and I was told I was crazy… Turns out I was just ahead of my time!

Karey’s wedding photos are beautiful, elegant, and timeless — those memories will never fade! Learn more about her wedding photography services here and follow her on Instagram at @hazylanestudios.
