Wedding Photography: Why You Need the Wedding Pros

It’s no secret weddings can be expensive. As a result, many couples are turning to DIY options to cut costs. Although DIYing your wedding can lower your budget, it can also lead to unsatisfying results that don’t reflect your vision. For instance, some couples hire a friend to take their wedding photos instead of a professional wedding photographer.

This choice may seem ideal for your budget. However, you risk lackluster photos that miss the mark. Your wedding pictures are one of the most valuable keepsakes from your big day. Instead of taking a chance on a friend, invest in a professional who can provide stunning results you would be proud to share with your loved ones.

If you’re still undecided about this topic, keep reading to learn more about how to select the best photography option for your celebration.

wedding photography

Risks of DIY Wedding Photography

Some couples believe their friend can moonlight as a photographer because they have a camera and talent. And while your friend could do this, they would be working on your wedding day – not enjoying it like the rest of your guests. Rather than toasting to your love, they’ll be too focused on finding the right angle. Ideally, you don’t want to invite your friend to perform a job on your special day.

In addition, DIY wedding photos can result in poor execution. Yes, your friend could capture some shots from their phone, but this is your wedding. You deserve to have professional images capturing these memories, not a few mediocre snapshots for your Instagram.

Low-quality photos can also cause ripples in your friendship. You don’t want to receive pictures and feel resentful of your friend because you were disappointed in the results. It’s best to use a professional wedding photographer so you can enjoy your weekend festivities without any stress.

Perks of Hiring a Pro Wedding Photographer

If you’re nervous about your formal photoshoot, rest assured that your wedding photographer will come prepared with tripods, lights, and lighting umbrellas. They can use their expertise to manipulate the lighting and capture the perfect shots, regardless of setting or weather. Professionals also know how to direct people. So if you or your guests are uncomfortable with modeling, they can help you pose naturally.

As for your big day, your photographer will likely have a relationship with the venue, making the coordination process a breeze. They will know the best corners on the property, how the lighting changes during the day, and where to position you for the best backdrops.

Finally, you can build a lasting relationship with them. After your engagement and wedding shoots, you will be familiar with their workflow and may hire them in the future. Before you know it, you’ll have a go-to photographer to document all your important milestones.

Capture Your Special Day the Right Way

Wedding photography is a valuable investment worth discussing with your partner. Rather than roping a friend in to do the job and regretting it, consider hiring a professional who can capture gorgeous, timeless photos to add to your gallery wall. Your big day deserves to be remembered the right way!

7 Valentine’s Day Surprises for Your Fiancé(e)

Love is in the air with Valentine’s Day just around the corner! Now that you’re engaged, there’s no better time to shower your fiancé(e) with love. While you can go with the classic approach and buy chocolates and flowers, consider making this year extra special by adding a personal touch to your gifts. There are plenty of creative ideas, but if you need assistance, here are seven Valentine’s Day surprises that will sweep your fiancé(e) off their feet!

Valentine's Day

Engraved jewelry

There’s nothing more charming than a custom present, like engraved jewelry. So go beyond a beautiful bracelet or necklace and get it engraved with your partner’s name. It’s a small yet powerful symbol, exuding love and attention to detail. Whether you select a golden charm, rose gold bracelet, or silver necklace, your significant other will appreciate the thought you put into it.

Mrs. box

Is a wedding in the works? If so, consider ordering a Mrs. Box, a gorgeous, custom ring box for your special someone. You can select the style, size, color, and a personal monogram. This gift is an excellent way to make your engagement stand out and add a pinch of personality to your Valentine’s Day present. Your partner will cherish every detail, from your heartfelt speech to the beautiful ring box presentation.

Ring dish

When it comes to smaller items, like rings, it’s nice to have a home base for them. That’s where the ring dish comes in. This stunning piece is the perfect place for valuables and keepsakes. Complete with metallic gold accents, these porcelain plates are a beautiful addition to a recipient’s home. For safekeeping, your partner can place them near the sink or nightstand. As the saying goes, “A place of everything and everything in its place.”

Coordinates print

Is there a location marking a memorable moment in your relationship? Besides framing a picture of you two at a special spot, consider ordering a custom coordinates print. This present is chic, easy, and thoughtful, designed on museum-graded paper with high resolution. If you need some destination ideas, you can choose the restaurant where you had your first date or a trip you went on together.

Story of us illustration

Take a walk down memory lane with a personalized timeline of your relationship. A Story of Us illustration offers a fun glimpse into your journey and the memories you’ve made so far. You can select milestone icons and customize the text to go with them. Feel free to get creative and design an unforgettable Valentine’s Day gift for your fiancé(e)!

Custom bow tie or tie

For fancy engagements (or your wedding), you can make your partner stand out with a custom-printed tie or bow tie. Knotty Tie manufactures its products in the USA from recycled fabric and offers 500 different colors, three styles, and a diverse catalog of patterns. So whether you’re choosing a tie to match your wedding color palette or adding a unique item to your significant other’s closet, this quirky gift will make them smile.

Custom monogram socks

You can never go wrong with custom socks. If your partner doesn’t have their initials on their socks, it’s time to change that. Consider selecting a sleek and modern style or opt for a fun pattern. The beauty of this gift is the option for a single pair or a box. You also receive an assortment of CleanKnit, textured, core, and patterns when you order a package. Once you’ve picked your top styles, include the initials to complete the gift.

Go above and beyond this year

As you prepare for Valentine’s Day, bookmark this post and surprise your fiancé(e) with a memorable present, symbolizing your love and appreciation for them. It will be the perfect treat before you tie the knot!

Plus, you can always use this list for future reference to continue the magic for more Valentine’s Days to come.

4 Things Newly Engaged Couples Forget

Wedding planning can often feel like cramming for an exam. You’re working through to-do lists and hoping you cover everything. But when it comes to planning your special day, it’s normal to forget simple details, like setting a budget. Luckily, we’ve got you covered. Here are four essential steps to remember as you and your partner make your way to the altar!

engaged couples

Purchase insurance for your new ring

Not a fan of travel insurance? You may want to reconsider when it comes to your engagement ring. Your ring is valuable, costing thousands of dollars. It also has sentimental value, so you don’t want to risk losing it, especially if you need to get it resized.

For financial protection in the case of damage, loss, or theft, it’s wise to invest in engagement ring insurance. Many insurance policies include replacement, repair, and reimbursement options. So you can rest assured knowing your ring is protected no matter the circumstances. Make sure to add this to your to-do list before you forget!

Create a budget and guest list BEFORE looking at venues

Everyone recommends reserving a wedding venue in advance to secure your date (especially since they’re in demand!). And while this step is a must, don’t make the mistake of booking without knowing the specifics of your celebration. When you tour wedding venues without a budget or guest count in mind, you risk investing in a spot that doesn’t fulfill your wedding needs.

Instead, set aside time with your partner to establish a budget to avoid missteps. A spending plan will ensure you’re intentional with your funds and provide a ballpark figure for your dream venue. Of course, you also want a guest count, so your venue can adequately accommodate everyone.

Before you finalize your venue, remember to start with the basics to ensure everything falls into place.

Hire a planner

Many couples attempt to juggle everything without a wedding planner or hire a month-of coordinator closer to the wedding. But the true value comes from having a professional guide you throughout the process. A wedding coordinator can help you create a budget, navigate family dynamics, find the perfect venue, hire vendors, and more. So rather than spreading yourself thin, consider bringing a professional on board to take care of all the details. Remember, you and your partner should enjoy your engagement too. A wedding planner will allow you to ease into your celebration.

Enjoy the newly engaged bliss

Excited to get the ball rolling, many couples dive headfirst into planning by creating Pinterest boards and researching vendors. But once the wedding day comes along, you’ll be married for life. You only get engaged once, so remember to be present and live it up! Whether you host an engagement party or buy a “future Mrs.” mug, cherish this time.

Wedding planning is an adventure, but you don’t have to bear the responsibilities and endless to-do lists alone. Instead, you can depend on your partner, wedding planner, and support network to make the most of your engagement experience.

Which of these tips are you adding to your list? Share this post with your partner, so you can kick off your wedding plans on the right foot and enjoy the journey!

6 Wedding Traditions Couples are Skipping in 2023

Like the seasons, trends move swiftly, and the wedding industry is no stranger to change. While weddings are known for traditions, many couples are switching things up and bringing their unique flavor to the mix. If you’re not a fan of the wedding march, don’t worry! You’re not alone. There are plenty of ways to customize your wedding to reflect you and your partner. So, wondering what to keep or change? Here are six wedding traditions couples are skipping in 2023.

wedding traditions

Playing hot potato with the bouquet

We’ve seen a bouquet toss in every romantic comedy we’ve ever watched. However, this tradition is losing traction. Nowadays, couples want to preserve their flowers by planting them in a garden or drying them for a display. Some also believe this trend is too cheesy for their liking, while others feel it’s a bit sexist for their taste. So enjoy your flowers, and if throwing the bouquet is a tradition you can’t picture your day without, go for it!

Requiring best man or maid of honor speeches

Did someone say public speaking? Count us out! There’s nothing simple about speaking in front of a crowd, especially when achieving the perfect balance of wittiness and charm is expected. Now that some couples aim for more intimate celebrations, there’s no time for multiple toasts.

Retiring this tradition is undoubtedly a relief for future best men and maids of honor with social anxiety. So, if you’re not a fan of this to-do, scratch it from your timeline and focus on dancing the night away.

Capturing family photos

It’s no secret that tensions run high in some families. As a result, keeping clashing family members separate during a photoshoot is tough. That’s why many couples would much rather skip family photos altogether. Instead, you can capture candid moments with a photographer and rent a photo booth as a fun addition to your reception.

Being given away

While walking down the aisle with a parental figure seems sweet, some modern couples point out that it can feel objectifying to be given away to someone else. No one should feel like a package en route to someone’s home. Alternatively, you can stride down the aisle by yourself or walk hand-in-hand with your partner. Of course, making your way to the altar with a parent or guardian can be an empowering experience if you always imagined it. Just do what feels good to you!

Appointing separate sides at your ceremony

Why designate separate sides when you can give your guests free rein? The latest trend allows friends and family to sit wherever they like. This seating approach is ideal for couples with similar friends who want to avoid awkward conversations about why someone sits in a certain spot. Skip the drama and instead let people find their own seats.

Sticking with old-school playlists

Remember what we said about the wedding march? It’s okay to switch out traditional songs for ones that better represent your relationship. While the wedding march is a triumphant and classic tune, it’s not for everyone.

More couples are opting for unique songs throughout their ceremony. So whether you play an Ed Sheeran ballad or an upbeat instrumental, it’s much more fun to customize a playlist that fits your taste.

When it comes to weddings, trends are constantly changing, and new traditions are blossoming. So go traditional or unique, but whatever you do, make sure your wedding is the perfect representation of who you are as a couple!

How to Level Up Your Event Photo Booth Experience

How to Level Up Your Event Photo Booth Experience

Your wedding is a day you’ll remember forever. While you may have a photographer to capture each intimate moment, you can also leave a memorable impression on your guests by renting a photo booth. This entertaining addition will bring out the best in your guests and ensure everyone has fun throughout the night. You can also get creative with personal touches to enhance the experience. If you want to bring a unique twist to your photo booth, here are some ideas to take yours to the next level.

How to Level Up Your Event Photo Booth Experience

Go big with props

No photo booth experience is complete without props. Silly faces, masks, hats, wigs, and signs are all fun ways for guests to let loose and express themselves. Props bring out a playfulness that balances the elegance of the celebration. So throw on those bright wigs and get ready to make some memories!

Many photo booths, like ones from Fantasy Sound, offer plenty of props, but you may consider DIYing or bringing your own, especially if you have a vision in mind that fits your wedding theme. For instance, if you’re going rustic, you can get some western hats and bandanas. Or, if you prefer the eclectic vibe, flower crowns are also a crowd favorite.

Customize your backdrops

Don’t want a blank canvas for your background? Go for a custom backdrop to personalize your wedding photo booth experience. You can have a monogram of your names, hashtags, wedding date, and splashes of your color palette. If you’re leaning into the latest trends, we recommend a live backdrop with greenery to bring the wow factor. Another fun idea is a floral backdrop that interweaves your colors for a stunning touch.

Get crafty with the guest book

Turn your photo booth into a wedding keepsake by having guests place their photos inside an album. In addition, you can provide markers and stickers for them to write their names and personalize a message. This photo booth idea is a unique way to bring out the artist in your family and friends.

Also, remind them to print out two copies so they have something special to take home.

Light it up

If you’re searching for an element that breathes magic into your pictures, focus on the lighting. A string of lights provides a warm and cozy ambiance perfect for capturing sweet moments. Plus, it’s a simple way to bring your fairytale to life with minimal effort. Add a string of lights for an extra spark in your photos, or better yet, use our Market Light Backdrop to give the illusion of twinkling stars.

Photo booths automatically transform an event. But adding elements like props and lights can make the photo booth experience even more enjoyable. So whether you go for a simple backdrop or bring out all the stops with props, you and your guests will remember the night for years to come.

Are you ready to elevate your event and photo booth? Then, RSVP to the next Event Services Showcase on 11/16 to meet our team and learn how we can service your special day!

Tylar Delegeane Photography

Tylar Delegeane, Tylar Delegeane Photography {Creative Partner Spotlight}

Nothing beats getting to sit down and talk to our fellow creatives, especially people like Tylar that truly enjoy making every couple’s wedding dreams come true! We love seeing the artistic way Tylar captures all of those special moments of a wedding day — and after talking to her, it’s clear that her craft is inspired by her passion for weddings!

Tylar Delegeane Photography

Here’s a bit about Tylar Delegeane Photography and the woman behind the lens:

Tell us a bit about your professional background. What brought you to the event industry?

Originally I wanted to be a sports photographer! During my college years, I worked for a local photography studio that specialized in weddings and the rest is history! I fell in love with weddings and I’ve been wanting capture love stories ever since.

What do you love about your job?

I love all aspects of a wedding day – the details, the beautiful dresses, the gorgeous cakes but I love the emotions the most. A bride’s first look with her dad, a mother and son’s dance together, the bride and groom walking into their reception seeing all of their loved ones clapping for them – it’s all so special and I still can’t believe that I get to be the one to capture these stories. It’s so special and humbling!

If you could share one wedding planning tip with an engaged couple, what would you tell them?

One of my biggest tips is to ENJOY the planning process! It’s a lot to take in with all of the different vendors you have to meet, planning meetings to attend and seating charts to make but it goes by so quickly. Pick a certain day of the week to do one new task on your list or enjoy a tasting (or a glass of wine)! This is a once in a lifetime moment!

Delford West Flowers

Karl R Eckel, Delford West Flowers {Creative Partner Spotlight}

Floral arrangements can make an event space come to life with the right florist. Lucky for you, we got to interview the very talented owner of Delford West Flowers, Karl R. Eckel!

He’s got an extraordinary eye for design, but we’ll let him tell you more about himself!

Tell us a bit about your professional background. What brought you to the event industry?

I was brought into the event industry on a recommendation from my uncle, a friend needed a part time driver for a flower shop. It was during high school and I was in the work study program and was able to attain credits with a part time job. After working there for two years, I wanted to own my own business and decided on a flower shop.

What do you love about your job?

I love my job because it is always changing and evolving, from the business aspect as well as the clients. I knew that I was not a person to work in an office with set hours. Even though we sell wedding flowers, I feel we are helping people fulfill the dreams of their perfect wedding, no matter how big or small.

If you could share one wedding planning tip with an engaged couple, what would you tell them?

The best tip I can give to engaged couples is to have the wedding they want; the only people they should please are themselves.

Who doesn’t want the best of the best bringing their space to life?! If you’re looking for a fantastic florist in Livermore, Delford West Flowers can hook you up. Check out their floral eye candy at @delfordwestflowers while you’re at it!

Looking Ahead at 2022 Wedding Trends

It’s here, it’s here! The New Year is here and, with it, we’re welcoming a whole slate of 2022 wedding trends fresh for the picking. For our fellow industry pros, you’re well aware that we’re in for a busy year. And for the engaged couples out there, you’re probably in the thick of wedding planning for your 2022 or 2023 wedding.

It’s true — as an industry, we’re still catching up from the countless postponements from the pandemic. Social distancing and restrictions on traveling and mass gatherings had put a damper on many wedding plans. However, with new knowledge about how to mitigate risk and manage COVID-19, weddings are back in full swing again!

2022 wedding trends

Let’s dive into the 2022 wedding trends to know this year…

If you are getting married, involved in planning your friend’s wedding, or simply curious about what’s on the horizon for weddings in 2022, we’ve got you covered. We’re giving you a lowdown on the hottest 2022 wedding trends that will dominate the scene this year and beyond.

Luxury meets comfort

This year, expect many engaged couples to keep the celebration to pared-down perfection! While classic black-tie weddings are definitely here to stay, events will be slightly less formal. Weddings in 2022 will exude a casual, elegant vibe and have a more inviting atmosphere. Think cocktail-style parties with posh food trucks in the vicinity, and the like.

Multiple-day celebrations

As we return to in-person gatherings, it comes as no surprise that engaged couples are putting extra effort into ensuring they create wonderful memories with loved ones at their wedding. As a result, many are planning multi-day experiences to make the most of their celebrations. This gives them more time to mingle and catch up with all of their favorite people outside of the event proper. It also allows them to space out meetings with guests and avoid mass gatherings with too many people.

Domestic destination weddings

Travel continues to be tricky as many countries have adopted stringent requirements for entry and tourism. Thus, you can expect more and more couples to explore beautiful, otherworldly destinations within the country for their celebrations. Not only is it more cost-effective, but it’s also more accessible for guests who are apprehensive of air travel. And this way, everyone can still enjoy some well-deserved respite from daily life without the hassle of international travel.

Weekday nuptials

Weekday weddings have been on the rise in recent years, and they will continue to be prevalent in the coming year due to increased demand. As restrictions loosen up, more and more vendors and venues have found themselves fully booked for weekends through 2022, and even into 2023. Weekday weddings are a great way to avoid traffic or crowds that often swell during the weekends. Not to mention, many couples are impatient to finally tie the knot and a weekday celebration can make it happen!

Countryside vibe

In need of a wedding theme idea? Many couples are finding inspiration from the hit Netflix series, Bridgerton. Expect trailing wisteria, Georgian wedding venues, personalized wax seals, and regency blue color palettes to abound in the wedding scene this coming year. And it comes as no surprise as, after over a year of lockdowns, couples are craving refreshing, outdoorsy weddings.

Technology-infused weddings

Livestreaming, online RSVPs, and QR codes that direct guests to the wedding website: These are just a few of the ways technology is incorporated into this year’s weddings. While quarantine restrictions are loosening in most states, travel may still not be possible or safe for everyone you want at your wedding, whether for health or other reasons. In 2022, couples are embracing technology to bridge the gaps!

These six trends are transforming the industry and the way we plan weddings, so keep an open mind as you embark on the next chapter of your journey to the aisle. Whether you’re nearly there or you’re just starting out, consider how these trends can influence your big day for the better!

Selecting a Wedding Date: Pros + Cons of Each Season

Welcome to your wedding planning journey! The first box you need to check off is to choose your ideal wedding date. With that, you’ll be free to book your venue, photographer, and other important vendors and create a plan to ensure everything falls in the right place at the right time. Plus, the season of your wedding will influence your theme and color palette! Not to mention, this important date will stick with you for the rest of your life (hello, anniversary!).

Needless to say, your wedding date determines everything from the food you serve to the type of lighting design you use. Yet, every season offers its own set of pros and cons, so it’s important to put some thought behind your choice.

With all the beauty and uniqueness each season offers, let’s weigh out your options.

SPRING: March, April, and May

Robin Williams once said, “Spring is nature’s way of saying let’s party!” — we couldn’t agree more! Flowers are blossoming, birds are singing, and it feels like everything is waking up from hibernation.

Spring is a wonderful season to get married and, naturally, one that is highly coveted. After all, nothing beats the natural beauty spring offers! From fragrant cherry blossoms to delicate peonies, the soft colors of spring will make your wedding feel like the enchanted love story fairytales are made of. Picture being surrounded by pastel colors mixed with earth tones and all the florals you can imagine. #LOVE!

Logistics-wise, spring is a great time to celebrate your wedding as most people are in town. The holidays are in the rearview mirror, but summer is still to come — your wedding day will be a day your guests eagerly await! Since many people aren’t traveling, expect those RSVPs to come in left and right.

Keep in mind, though: Spring can be unpredictable when it comes to weather. In some parts of the country, it’s not unlikely to see snow in April or a sunny 80-degree day in March. Plus, you know what they say about April showers! And, of course, spring is allergy season which can present challenges for some if planning at an outdoor venue.

SUMMER: June, July, August

Ah, summer. Longer days mean more time to party! Whether you choose to have your wedding at the beach or an outdoor garden space, there is no need to rush. The sun will hold it down for you late into the day!

The food menu tends to be more fun in the summer, too! Get creative with cheeses, fruits, hors d’oeuvres, and drinks. Imagine roasting some ‘mallows at a bonfire as the perfect nightcap to your big day with your loved ones!

Into vibrant colors like coral or fuchsia? Go crazy with it! Summer weddings can accommodate any vision, and rest assured, you’ll have the flowers that you are looking for as well. That summer Pinterest wedding board can become your reality!

Now, keep in mind that most event pros book up quickly for the summer, so you will need to get the ball rolling early to ensure you have ample time to get your first choice vendors. (Also, don’t expect any wiggle room in pricing!) Summer is also the busiest season for travel — so don’t expect a 100% RSVP rate as your friends and family may already have vacations planned. Again, starting your planning journey early will help to give people enough time to plan in advance.

And let’s not forget about the heat! Consider the time of the day everything is taking place, especially if your wedding will be outdoors. The heat can be distracting and even dangerous, so be mindful of your guests’ comfort as well as your own!

FALL: September, October, November

Fall is a great time to say “I do” with a beautiful natural backdrop and favorable weather. If you are dreaming of the perfect rustic wedding, or love moody hues of deep purples, reds, and bronze, fall is for you. Want weather dependability? You guessed it; fall is perfect!

One big autumn perk is that vendors tend to be more available! Plus, as the industry heads into the off-season in most areas, rates may start to lower. Sticking to your budget is vital, and a fall wedding could potentially add a bit more spare change to your pocket. Maybe you can book a videographer after all!

Like all good things, fall presents a few challenges of its own. For one, it’s possible that your guests are tight on funds after a summer of vacations and the holiday season just around the corner. It’s possible your headcount isn’t as long as you hope.

Plus, consider that you will lose extra daylight as it gets later in the season. Though an evening fall can be cozy, you might have to adjust your photo schedule and accept that certain pictures may not be feasible. But, hey, you get pictures with all of that gorgeous foliage, so that’s a win in our book!

WINTER: December, January, February

Dreaming of a white Christmas doesn’t come close to the magical feeling of a beautiful winter wonderland wedding. The rich dark reds, blues, and silvers will make your wedding gleam with elegance!

Not to mention, a Winter wedding with fresh snow makes for lovely pictures. No snow? No problem! A photo by the fireplace wrapped in a blanket with your beloved captures the intimacy and eloquence of your big day. A winter wedding is all about getting creative and leaning into the seasonal beauty!

Another winter wedding perk? The dessert bar! Bring on the mulled cider and hot cocoa bar; lay out all the comfort snacks and drinks. Turn the cozy comfort level up to the max!

Keep in mind, though, winter weddings don’t come without the risk of a weather postponement. A sprinkle of snow is usually welcomed, but nobody wants to see feet of snow on their wedding day!

Another challenge to consider: You might have to compete with the holidays. Your guests might be using their time off to visit relatives, or their budget might be tight. Plan accordingly and give your guests grace if they choose to decline your big day.

The big takeaway here is that, no matter the season you choose, you can have the perfect wedding day of your dreams! Each season offers a unique vibe, but they also come with their own challenges. Be sure to weigh them out before making your final decision. Once you choose, lean into your season and have fun with all the possibilities!
