Seven Questions To Ask When Hiring Your Wedding DJ

Kevin Dennis

Fantasy Sound Event Service’s Kevin Dennis is back with our monthly blog series, Seven with Kevin, to share why choosing the right wedding DJ is more than picking someone with a great playlist. They’re not just there to get your dance floor movin’, they’re there to keep your timeline on track, keep the energy up, and create a lasting impression for years to come. So, asking questions (the right questions) is so important when booking your Disc Jockey. Here is a list of Seven Questions to Ask When Hiring Your Wedding DJ!

1. Ask About Their Experience

We know that this question can feel obvious, but Kevin thinks it’s the most important to ask. There’s more to a wedding than meets the eye, and having a wedding DJ there that has done this time and time again really makes a difference. Kevin says, “You’re gonna want someone that has been through the battle, has dealt with family dynamics, and has handled a rowdy wedding party.”

Kevin goes on to say that a seasoned wedding DJ will function like an extension of your vendor team, anticipating everything as if it were muscle memory. They’ve been through every possible scenario and know how to handle your wedding with care.

2. Ask If Their Specialty Is In Weddings

Now, a DJ’s experience is only helpful if they specialize in weddings. Weddings really are their own category. It’s essential to ask if they have specific wedding experience, not just general event knowledge. Kevin shares, “They may have more of a background in corporate events, playing in clubs, or school dances. All very different than your wedding day. The expectations are totally different.”

A wedding DJ will understand the event flow, make announcements, cater to all ages, communicate with your vendor team, and so much more. Make sure the DJ you book is able to execute these responsibilities. It’s the biggest day of your life, and they play a big part.

3. Ask If They Can Customize Playlists

Most wedding DJs can and will do this for you, but it’s one of those questions you should ask! If this wasn’t on your checklist, Kevin thinks you should circle back.

“I highly encourage couples to know their family and friends’ favorite songs ahead of time, because it can help guide your DJ once the dance floor opens up,” Kevin says. You know your guests better than anyone! Providing these details to your DJ will allow them to create a personalized experience once the dance floor opens. The more they know, the more they can help YOU!

4. Ask About Song Requests

This one is completely up to you. But Kevin has a little bit of advice if you are open to requests: “Build a ‘Do Not Play List’ list. Trust me. I once had an aunt ask to play the YMCA multiple times throughout the wedding. The couple knew she would do this in advance, and made sure to inform me and create that list.”

You may be a couple that is all for requests, but communication is key! Talk to your wedding DJ about how you would like requests to be handled so you’re not caught with a not-so-fun surprise on your big day.

5. Ask About Their Ceremony Package

You know what they say about assuming…and this is one area where you don’t want to take that risk. Your ceremony is arguably the most significant part of the day. So, make sure you do your homework and find out more about your wedding DJ’s ceremony package!

Kevin says, “Ask if they will provide microphones, speakers, and audiovisual equipment. You should also consider their experience in providing those things. Ensure they know their stuff.” Seriously, don’t be afraid to ask! Your ceremony is a significant moment, and your wedding DJ should be well-prepared.

6. Ask If They Will Act As The MC

This is one of the most commonly asked questions that Kevin gets (and for good reason). If you’re not familiar with the flow of a wedding, your DJ is often responsible for keeping the event on track with announcements and transitions. Kevin has heard a thing or two about DJs who don’t step into that MC role. Kevin recalls, “I’ve heard horror stories from planners where DJs have refused to speak on the mic, and unfortunately, the planner had to step in. On your wedding day, it’s a little too late to find out your DJ won’t be making any announcements.”

Don’t let this be you! Confirm ahead of time that your wedding DJ is comfortable MCing.

7. Ask What They Include, Such As …

Kevin wants you to know that it’s not always apples to apples when comparing DJ companies. This goes for any wedding vendor you may hire. Ask about arrival time, setup duration, included equipment, and most importantly contracts and liability insurance. Kevin mentions, “It’s about protecting you, your guests, and your investment. Again, do your homework and make sure your DJ is fully insured and it operating with professionalisim.”

At the end of the day, your wedding DJ should be more than someone who hits play on a playlist. Ask the right questions, trust your gut, and don’t be afraid to dig deeper during those consultations.
