6 Wedding Traditions Couples are Skipping in 2023

Like the seasons, trends move swiftly, and the wedding industry is no stranger to change. While weddings are known for traditions, many couples are switching things up and bringing their unique flavor to the mix. If you’re not a fan of the wedding march, don’t worry! You’re not alone. There are plenty of ways to customize your wedding to reflect you and your partner. So, wondering what to keep or change? Here are six wedding traditions couples are skipping in 2023.

wedding traditions

Playing hot potato with the bouquet

We’ve seen a bouquet toss in every romantic comedy we’ve ever watched. However, this tradition is losing traction. Nowadays, couples want to preserve their flowers by planting them in a garden or drying them for a display. Some also believe this trend is too cheesy for their liking, while others feel it’s a bit sexist for their taste. So enjoy your flowers, and if throwing the bouquet is a tradition you can’t picture your day without, go for it!

Requiring best man or maid of honor speeches

Did someone say public speaking? Count us out! There’s nothing simple about speaking in front of a crowd, especially when achieving the perfect balance of wittiness and charm is expected. Now that some couples aim for more intimate celebrations, there’s no time for multiple toasts.

Retiring this tradition is undoubtedly a relief for future best men and maids of honor with social anxiety. So, if you’re not a fan of this to-do, scratch it from your timeline and focus on dancing the night away.

Capturing family photos

It’s no secret that tensions run high in some families. As a result, keeping clashing family members separate during a photoshoot is tough. That’s why many couples would much rather skip family photos altogether. Instead, you can capture candid moments with a photographer and rent a photo booth as a fun addition to your reception.

Being given away

While walking down the aisle with a parental figure seems sweet, some modern couples point out that it can feel objectifying to be given away to someone else. No one should feel like a package en route to someone’s home. Alternatively, you can stride down the aisle by yourself or walk hand-in-hand with your partner. Of course, making your way to the altar with a parent or guardian can be an empowering experience if you always imagined it. Just do what feels good to you!

Appointing separate sides at your ceremony

Why designate separate sides when you can give your guests free rein? The latest trend allows friends and family to sit wherever they like. This seating approach is ideal for couples with similar friends who want to avoid awkward conversations about why someone sits in a certain spot. Skip the drama and instead let people find their own seats.

Sticking with old-school playlists

Remember what we said about the wedding march? It’s okay to switch out traditional songs for ones that better represent your relationship. While the wedding march is a triumphant and classic tune, it’s not for everyone.

More couples are opting for unique songs throughout their ceremony. So whether you play an Ed Sheeran ballad or an upbeat instrumental, it’s much more fun to customize a playlist that fits your taste.

When it comes to weddings, trends are constantly changing, and new traditions are blossoming. So go traditional or unique, but whatever you do, make sure your wedding is the perfect representation of who you are as a couple!

  1. Stevie Wonder – Isn’t She Lovely

This upbeat R&B and soul track is not only a favorite among wedding couples but will immediately melt hearts all over the dance floor.

  1. Train – Marry Me

There’s nothing like a sweet ballad to keep the crowds in awe. With lyrics lending themselves to forgetting your troubles and starting a new chapter of your life, you will feel like you’re falling in love all over again.

  1. Etta James – At Last

Reminding listeners that the long-awaited moment has finally arrived, this beautiful melody is the perfect song to debut your love and new life together.

  1. Ed Sheeran – Perfect

While everyone is head over heels for love at first sight, Ed Sheeran’s Perfect is a sweeping anthem celebrating imperfections through the companion’s eyes. With soft vocals over piano keys, this song will make you two feel like you’re the only ones in the room.

  1. Elton John – Your Song

Imagine a song dedicated to you on your special day. This simple ballad is sure to bring a swelling sense of love through its blend of lyrics and soulful singing.

  1. Righteous Brothers – Unchained Melody

A beautiful classic, Unchained Melody allows you to slow down and savor the moment with your partner. This gem is perfect if you’re searching for a song with a slower tempo.

  1. Frank Sinatra – The Way You Look Tonight

This jazzy tune will surely transport you back to a simpler time. The trumpets and Sinatra’s vocal crescendos will leave you with a bright sparkle in your eyes.

  1. Jason Mraz – I’m Yours

Looking for an uplifting tune? I’m Yours features a simple combo – a ukulele and vocals. As soon as the ukulele plays, you will find yourself swaying in your partner’s arms with guests bobbing their heads (or lighting up the room with their phones).

  1. Shania Twain – From This Moment On

From the country legend Shania Twain, this power ballad hits the core of love with a gorgeous resolute of marching into the future with the love of your life. It’s an excellent choice for the first dance or first kiss.

  1. Hall and Oates – You Make My Dreams

Who says happy endings only happen in movies? Hall and Oates beg to differ! You make my dreams is a fun bop perfect for dancing, laughing, and getting everyone up out of their seats.

We hope this vault of classics inspires you to pick the songs that speak to your heart and fill your day with endless memories. For more assistance with your wedding details, RSVP to our next Event Services Showcase today!

Nothing beats getting to sit down and talk to our fellow creatives, especially people like Tylar that truly enjoy making every couple’s wedding dreams come true! We love seeing the artistic way Tylar captures all of those special moments of a wedding day — and after talking to her, it’s clear that her craft is inspired by her passion for weddings!

Tylar Delegeane Photography

Here’s a bit about Tylar Delegeane Photography and the woman behind the lens:

Tell us a bit about your professional background. What brought you to the event industry?

Originally I wanted to be a sports photographer! During my college years, I worked for a local photography studio that specialized in weddings and the rest is history! I fell in love with weddings and I’ve been wanting capture love stories ever since.

What do you love about your job?

I love all aspects of a wedding day – the details, the beautiful dresses, the gorgeous cakes but I love the emotions the most. A bride’s first look with her dad, a mother and son’s dance together, the bride and groom walking into their reception seeing all of their loved ones clapping for them – it’s all so special and I still can’t believe that I get to be the one to capture these stories. It’s so special and humbling!

If you could share one wedding planning tip with an engaged couple, what would you tell them?

One of my biggest tips is to ENJOY the planning process! It’s a lot to take in with all of the different vendors you have to meet, planning meetings to attend and seating charts to make but it goes by so quickly. Pick a certain day of the week to do one new task on your list or enjoy a tasting (or a glass of wine)! This is a once in a lifetime moment!

Delford West Flowers

Karl R Eckel, Delford West Flowers {Creative Partner Spotlight}

Floral arrangements can make an event space come to life with the right florist. Lucky for you, we got to interview the very talented owner of Delford West Flowers, Karl R. Eckel!

He’s got an extraordinary eye for design, but we’ll let him tell you more about himself!

Tell us a bit about your professional background. What brought you to the event industry?

I was brought into the event industry on a recommendation from my uncle, a friend needed a part time driver for a flower shop. It was during high school and I was in the work study program and was able to attain credits with a part time job. After working there for two years, I wanted to own my own business and decided on a flower shop.

What do you love about your job?

I love my job because it is always changing and evolving, from the business aspect as well as the clients. I knew that I was not a person to work in an office with set hours. Even though we sell wedding flowers, I feel we are helping people fulfill the dreams of their perfect wedding, no matter how big or small.

If you could share one wedding planning tip with an engaged couple, what would you tell them?

The best tip I can give to engaged couples is to have the wedding they want; the only people they should please are themselves.

Who doesn’t want the best of the best bringing their space to life?! If you’re looking for a fantastic florist in Livermore, Delford West Flowers can hook you up. Check out their floral eye candy at @delfordwestflowers while you’re at it!

Everyone loves the opportunity to play — and a little friendly competition never hurt!  What’s more fun than a classic backyard party experience?

Team mascots

Whether they’re warming up the crowd during cocktail hour, livening up the reception after dinner, or surprising your guests near the end, there are a multitude of options to keep your loved ones on their toes!

DIY food stations

Doughnut towers, ice cream sundae bowls, chocolate fountains, popcorn bowls, champagne flute stations, and so many more options are ready for you to make your own! Everyone loves an opportunity to eat, especially something they love! Get your guests off their feet and into your creative use of space and food; you and your guests will not be disappointed!

Choreographed dances

Hear us out: flash mob. Nothing like shaking up your guests’ expectations like surprising them with entertainment filled with familiar faces! This will take a little more time and planning but is so worth the added pizzaz on your big day. It’s also a very fun bonding moment for you and your wedding party!

A nod to shared passions

Think outside of the box. What are you and your future spouse passionate about? How can you incorporate that into your wedding day? The options are endless for your big day’s itinerary, so make it your own! If you love board games or murder mysteries, consider hosting a murder mystery game before dinner is served (a la The Office). Remember, it’s YOUR day!

Fireworks

If your venue permits, fireworks are always an exciting addition that adds a romantic flare to your wedding day. Enjoy the lights and shimmers in the sky before your big sendoff. Talk about going off with a bang!

There’s no need to feel confined to the typical wedding itinerary! The options are truly endless for your big day, so get creative and don’t hold back. Allow yourself the opportunity to thoroughly enjoy your day and your guests!

3 Types of Event Drapery Fabric

Whether it’s a Pinterest mood board, a fave Instagram aesthetic, or an idea in your head, you have the look and feel of your wedding day nailed down. If you want to achieve a particular look and feel, you will want all the details right.

A perfect wedding entails the right flowers, venue, colors, and drapery fabric! Yet, drapery fabric often gets overlooked, so let’s talk about how to pick the right style.

Sheer Drapery

Sheer drapery might be your jam if you’re after a romantic, dreamy, light, and airy feel. Sheer fabric is lightweight, great for uplighting, and easy to manipulate into whatever you need. It gives off a soft, flowy look that is perfect for layering!

Poly Satin Drapery

Poly Satin Drapery

If elegance and high-class vibes are your goal, poly satin drapery is the fabric for you. This material has a glossy finish and comes in many colors, so you can get creative with your color palette. Poly satin’s sheen steps it up a notch and elevates a space for a more elegant feel.

Velour Drapery

Royalty and old-world class are easily achieved with velour drapes. You might mistake this material for velvet, but velour is a superior choice over velvet as it’s more durable than its delicate counterpart. This fabric offers a soft texture that makes the space feel cozy and inviting. Perfect for making a large room feel more intimate for smaller guest counts!

Event drapery allows you to be creative in a multitude of ways, whether dressing up a table for food, guest books, and gifts or creating defined spaces within a larger room. Plus, certain materials can draw light in when needed or block light out for a dramatic effect — so a lighting designer can help you create the right design!

You can also use fabric to draw attention to certain areas of the room by hanging or draping around features like the sweetheart table, cake table, or dance floor. You can even use the material to accent centerpieces. The possibilities are endless! There are so many options for drapery and fabric, so be sure to check out what we have to offer!.

Weekday Weddings on AP {New Press}

If you have been considering a weekday wedding, you are not alone! Weekday weddings are becoming part of the norm as the industry navigates an unprecedented “wedding boom” in the wake of the pandemic — and it turns out couples and their guests are actually loving the midweek nuptials!

Not only do weekday weddings tend to be more cost-effective, but you will also have a better chance at booking top-notch vendors if you intend to tie the knot in 2022 or 2023. So if you have a dream wedding venue or vendor you want to book, picking a weekday can make it easier to secure them!

But be mindful: As bookings increase, time is still of the essence. In 2022, the wedding industry will produce the most weddings on record since 1984. Venues and vendors will be busier than ever, so it’s time to get to planning!

Our very own Kevin chimed in on the subject for AP News in an article, So long, Saturdays: More couples embrace weekday weddings. And we can confirm it’s true: Weekday celebrations have definitely been on the rise in Livermore!

Tipping Etiquette for Wedding Vendors

When planning your big day, it’s easy to get lost in the madness and forget about tipping your wedding vendors. But it’s so important to be respectful of their time and efforts, so it’s best to include gratuity in your wedding budget!

Although tipping is not required, some vendors may expect it — and likely deserve it. It is a great way to thank them for their superb service bringing your wedding day to life!

If you need guidance on whom to tip and how much to give, read on.

tipping

Tipping Etiquette 101

Here’s a breakdown of gratuity to include for each wedding vendor.

Officiant

Many ordained clergy members won’t accept cash tips for officiating wedding ceremonies. However, a donation to their church or religious institution is greatly appreciated. For a non-religious officiant, you can give them around $50.

Photographer and videographer

A lot of these vendors are business owners themselves, so tipping is often unnecessary. But if you’re incredibly happy with their work, feel free to give a generous tip of up to $100 (or more if you’re that satisfied!). If they have assistants or second-shooters, you can tip them anywhere from $50 to $75.

Caterer and waitstaff

While a service fee is often stipulated in your contract, this amount is typically divided amongst all the waitstaff. It’s a kind gesture to give them $10 to $20 each for their hard work. If bartending services aren’t part of your caterer’s package, tip 10% to 15% of the pre-tax bar bill.

Hair and Makeup Artists

Just as you would for a regular hair or makeup appointment, tip makeup artists and hairstylists 20% of the total bill.

Musicians and DJs

A tip between $25 and $50 per person is customary. And, if you book a band, remember to tip their sound technician as well!

Driver, Valet, Restroom, and Coat Check Attendants

If gratuity is not yet included in your transportation bill, tip your driver 15-20% of the total cost. For valet attendants, express your gratitude by tipping $1-2 per car, to be divided among them. And for the total amount to be allocated for your restroom and coat check attendants, multiply the number of guests by $0.50 to $2.

Wedding planner and florist

Since these vendors are typically business owners, they won’t be expecting a tip from you. If you are feeling generous, feel free to tip your wedding planner 10-20% of the total bill, or up to $500. Your florist may be tipped 10-15% of your total bill. If you prefer, you can also give them personal gifts instead.

Delivery Personnel

On your wedding day, you can expect a lot of deliveries—from your rentals to your wedding cake and flowers. Leave cash envelopes containing $5 to $10 to your coordinator or catering manager to hand out to delivery personnel.

Keep in mind that these numbers are only meant to serve as a guide. Ultimately, you should tip according to what your budget permits and the level of service you’ve received.

Photo of the Week

We absolutely LOVE this photo from Mia and Jovo’s May wedding at Casa Real! Their wedding party performed a traditional dance for them and you can just tell that everyone is having an absolute blast. Thanks so much to Rhee Bevere for capturing the whole day, but especially this magical moment!
